Jonathan Gonzalez To Return in October or November, Mulling Options

Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez will consider all viable alternatives before determining the next step for his career.

The champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) at 108 pounds maintained that he will give priority to the option that represents the best benefits from an economic aspect.

“I will wait for some results to determine if I will make a unification fight or defend the title in a mandatory,” González said to Carlos Gonzalez.

On June 24, González retained the light flyweight belt by beating Filipino Mark Anthony Barriga by unanimous decision as part of a fight card at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida.

“The unification fight could be against the World Boxing Association champion (Hiroto Kyoguchi). We have to wait for the WBO rankings because the first ranked is Filipino Mark Vicelles and the second is Elwin Soto who just lost, so I don’t know who the mandatory will be,” explained González.

“I will look at the [option] that represents the best business for me. The three champions need each other to make it economically attractive. We need to do this. In the lower weights it is not necessary to do 30 or 40 fights to unify the titles. I am the only Latino who is a champion at 108 pounds and the money is here,” Gonzalez added.

Gonzalez noted that late October or mid-November are potential dates for his next fight.

“I’ll take a few days off and then prepare my body for the storm. Everything I have changed, from the people [on my team] to the mental aspect. It was my second fight with Luis Espada and I will continue to improve,” Gonzalez concluded.
